Filipinos love them food sweet, agree? I guess I’m just one of those Pinoys who got a sweet tooth for just about any food.

  • 1 kg chicken
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 4 cloves crushed garlic
  • ½ tsp 5 spice powder
  • 4 pcs star anise
  • 3 tbsp cooking oil
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 3 tbsp cooking oil


  • Season chicken by rubbing it with salt all over.
  • Let it stand for 10 minutes.
  • After 10 minutes, heat cooking oil in a pan.
  • Pan-fry both sides of the chicken over medium to low heat for 5 minutes per side.
  • Drain out excess oil. Saute garlic and cook until light brown.
  • Add in soy sauce and chicken broth. Let it simmer for a few minutes.
  • Season with 5 spice powder and add star anise.
  • Cook for 30 to 35 minutes over medium to low heat to simmer. (Adjust water as needed but don’t put too much.)
  • Season with sugar, salt and pepper. Stir until flavors are well combined.
  • Transfer to a serving plate.
